Poppy, Star & Rushnyk Pysanka — a real Ukrainian goose egg, hand-painted in the traditional wax-batik technique. Red poppy blossoms with green leaves crown the top of the egg, a red-and-white "rushnyk" (woven-towel) stripe hangs down from the very top, and a wide red-and-gold diamond-lattice band is centered on a large white eight-pointed star medallion, with small floral rosettes scattered throughout.
The eight-pointed star, or "rozha," is one of the most recognizable sun symbols in pysanka art, the rushnyk stripe takes its name from the traditional woven ceremonial towel, and the poppy carries long-standing folk associations with remembrance and family memory.
As each egg is painted entirely by hand, the exact placement of every line and petal may vary slightly from the photos — this is part of what makes every pysanka one of a kind.
