Church & Poppy Medallion Pysanka — a real Ukrainian goose egg, hand-painted in the traditional wax-batik technique. The tradition of giving Easter eggs as gifts goes back to early times, when Ukrainians believed the egg was a symbol of the universe, a small model of the world and the source of life itself. People honored that belief with colorful ornaments, and after Christianity was established, the tradition became tied to Easter. The techniques have stayed the same over the centuries: a pysanka is a hand-painted goose egg, decorated using the wax-resist method, with each design taking considerable time and skill to complete. Such eggs were once passed down between generations as treasured family heirlooms.
