The triple symbolism has merged in the Ukrainian real egg: one of the egg itself as the author of Life, one of the color, and one of the ornamentation.
Legend has it that drops of blood of crucified Jesus Christ fell on Easter eggs coloring them red, and tears of Madonna, falling onto those colored eggs, transformed them into patterned Easter eggs. Since then Ukrainian eggs exist in the world as a symbol of love, beauty, and eternal Life.
The patterns of Ukrainian Easter eggs are very symbolic and reflect the power of Nature. Not by coincidence these artistic works can be seen wearing a symbol of the sun – a yellow circle with rays. The same can be said about "ducks’ necks" or "broken crosses" (form of solar motive), though it’s closer to the symbolic swastika. Such patterns have special magical powers and are able to protect not only the egg’s owner, but also all his family from many woes and diseases.
The most common floral ornament of Ukrainian eggs is a blossomed tree, like cherry, symbolizing love and eternal youth. However, animal motives also remain popular, especially the image of a horse or a deer, symbolizing strength and endurance.
But most often the Ukrainian real empty Easter eggs are decorated with geometric patterns: for example, the most popular theme called "forty wedges" features 48 triangles, each designed to fulfill one wish. The "ladder" egg is no less interesting, as a symbol of constant development; or "basket" egg, as a symbol of wisdom and maternity; and, finally, the "road" egg, as a symbol of eternity.
When purchasing the Ukrainian egg, you don’t just get a small piece of great art, but settle a "guardian angel" in your home, able to change your life for the better.
